Memories Matter Polaroid Board - for website.png

Positive Response training was developed in collaboration with Christine Slette, Executive Director of CASA of Del Norte.

Session Description

Trauma, behavior and learning issues, instability and neglect.  Our foster youth are constantly in survival mode. How do we get them out of survival mode and better support them on their educational and life journey?

In this interactive session, we’ll delve into what’s happening in the brain, it’s development, and the pivotal role memories play in both learning and behavior. Then, we’ll explore how to use this to positively support and influence behavior and learning outcomes.

Equipped with real-life examples and insights from seasoned child advocates, you’ll walk away with a better understanding of why foster youth are struggling, and how positive response techniques can make a difference.

What to Expect

Using visuals, animations, real world examples, and audience participation, this session focuses on helping individuals understand the "why" behind foster youth choices and behavior.   And then, explores how to use this understanding to positively support and influence behavior and learning outcomes.

Christine Slette, Executive Director of CASA of Del Norte, will share how they have implemented BioSocial Cognition in their Positive Response program, equipping advocates with the knowledge and understanding of what happens with the brain and how trauma can impact behaviors, so that they can better support and advocate for their foster youth.

Thomas C. Rector, founder of Accrescent Institute and previous Interim Director and Board Member of CASA of Del Norte,  will then provide an introduction to BioSocial Cognition and specifically apply it to understanding development, memory formation, and decision making in foster youth and how to use that understanding to positively support and influence behavior and learning outcomes.

Participants walk away with a deeper understanding of what’s happening in the brain, its development, and the memories at-risk youth have and how that creates behaviors and influences learning. Concrete examples from seasoned child advocates are used to provide context and illustrate how to use this understanding to positive support and influence both behavior and learning outcomes.
